In 1926, Lovecraft wrote to Upton, referring to Upton's previous verbal and visual disclosures, and asking to meet with him as quickly as possible. In early December, 1926, Upton sent one painting, along with his books and correspondence, to the North End Warehouse and Storage Company. On December 10, 1926, Upton returned from a visit to Providence and discovered that all the paintings in his studio had been stolen. He reported the theft and shot himself later that night. In the 1970's, antique dealer Felipe Santigo bought Upton's effects from the warehouse and sold the painting to Albert Keith. Later, Simon Waverly visited the warehouse area where Upton's things had been stored, and found a map by H. P. Lovecraft showing the location of R'lyeh. [RB Strange] Village.
