Snouted Thing

[JVS Snouted]: A creature that appeared in some of H. P. Lovecraft's dreams. It was a vague being of infinite evil which had been afflicting the inhabitants of a rotting, ancient town. It was a black, large-eared, crouching thing about the size of a large dog, with rudimentary bat-wings, and roughly resembling one of the Notre Dame gargoyles. In the first dream, Lovecraft was one of a party of men led by Captain Pickman, and armed with a device like an ankh, who pursued the creature over the roofs of the town. When Lovecraft fended off the thing with an ankh, it leapt on Captain Pickman and merged with him, becoming a hybrid thing clad in the silken robe of the captain, yet having the black, large-eared snout of the evil entity. It then galloped off on Pickman's horse.

In a later dream, the creature was eating a small child, and offered Lovecraft a taste. In another dream, the creature entered Lovecraft's bedroom in the form of a bat. When Lovecraft burned it with a hot iron, it changed into the form of Captain Pickman and attacked, but Lovecraft once again repelled it with his ankh.
