Increase and Cotton Mather affirmed that America is the Devil’s paradise. The Devil assigns familiars as counselors and protectors for witches. Gideon Godfrey hoped to destroy the sanctuary of Satan's spawn, and so to lift the hand of the Devil from the land. The Devil's followers hoped to send plague and pestilence, storm and famine, against their opponents. Cotton Mather was sickened by a colic sent by the Devil. [RB Satan]
