Great Old Ones Can Be Summoned
[August Derleth's Cthulhu Mythos]

Though the Great Old Ones (3) are said to be imprisoned, there are many instances of them appearing on Earth in recent times. For example, there have been visits in modern times from

Derleth never explains this paradox. However, it seems that the Great Old Ones (3) can be summoned temporarily by their devotees:

They walk unseen, They walk foul in lonely places where the Words have been spoken and the Rites howled through at Their Seasons, which are in the blood and differ from the seasons of man. [Lurker][paraphrased from HPL Dunwich (online text)]

These temporary visits are evidently not the full escape that the Great Old Ones (3) crave. Perhaps they can manifest only for a short time; possibly also their power is limited during such visits. Then again, since they are transdimensional beings, perhaps they actually remain in prison the whole time, and manifest only distant emanations of themselves here on the Earth plane.
