Garoth

A fourteen thousand year old demon. He was a member of the old race of masters that guide mankind.[1] He was once the ruler of his home world.[2] After his planet was destroyed by cosmic fire, he was at a loss for occupation.[1] Thereafter, he seems to have wandered randomly in search of quests.

In his journeys, Garoth often used the appearance of a human.[1] However, he could resume his true form and show his awful majesty at will.[2] In his true form, Garoth had wings and could fly through outer space. He could travel with extraordinary speed: "And directly he had first seen his destination the demon found himself there, for such is the speed of man's masters".[1] Even in his human form, Garoth had a blend of natural and supernatural powers that made him impervious to most dangers. For example, he could see in the dark and could breathe underwater.[2]

Garoth was a demon of careful upbringing. Garoth was generally polite and often experienced sympathy for victims and disapproval of those doing violent things. Still, his standards seemed to slip when it was expedient: "Garoth supposed he would have to sacrifice her. . . well, no matter." It was not Garoth's custom to shilly-shally.[2]

During his random adventures, Garoth

  • Observed a tragic romance between a milk-maid and a faun.[3]
  • Observed the harsh punishment of a beautiful but lethal female creature.[1]
  • Attempted to rescue an imprisoned maiden, only to repent when he discovered that she was monstrous.[2]
  • Witnessed a cult worshipping Yeb. Garoth considered himself more powerful than Yeb's worshippers, but mightily feared Yeb himself and fled in haste when Yeb arrived with Yog-Sototh and the bitch-goddess Shub-Niggarauth.[2]
